Barbie and Paulo spent an afternoon walking through Paris, starting along the Seine and ending in the streets around the city as the light faded.


We started by the river, moving around the bridges and stone architecture and letting the two of them move naturally through the space. The goal wasn't to photograph them in front of every landmark, but to let the city become part of the photographs in a way that felt natural to the afternoon.


As evening set in, we made our way through the smaller streets. Barbie wore a tailored plaid blazer with ballet flats, and the look felt right for Paris without being overly styled.


We finished outside a local shop after dark, with the streetlights and storefront becoming part of the last few photographs.


For sessions like this, especially in a city as visually distinct as Paris, there is already so much to work with: the architecture, the light, the streets, and the way a couple moves through them. Not every photograph needs to be perfectly composed, and not every location needs to be recognizable.


Finding the balance between direction and letting moments breathe is incredibly important, and a lot of that comes down to taste and intuition. There can be prompting when it is helpful, while still leaving enough room for the photographs to feel like the couple rather than a series of poses.


Some of the best photographs tend to happen in between — the way someone reaches for their partner, a laugh that wasn't planned, or the few seconds spent walking from one place to the next...
